Pearce Plowman

Party opts to press on to Telero. Seeking shelter from a storm they take refuge in the humble home of Pearce Plowman. The party learns that Pearce's grandfather was a hero of sorts and that Pearce is quite knowledgeable in local history. The party also learns other important details from Pearce. Pearce Plowman suggests avoiding the kobold lair. He seems to believe that the lair is extremely dangerous.

The following morning Pearce is visted by Justice Miser, local tax collector. Miser takes the onyx ring of Sally Plowman and after being intimidated by Prince Faelon, he "makes change" paying her back 49 gp.

Along the road to Telero, the party meets Rabbi Simeon who has certain funds which were entrusted to him by the King. Simeon is determined to make sure that Faleon's money is spent wisely, but he agrees to help reoutfit the party . Rabbi Simeon is unsuprised to learn that Faelon has lost all the money in his charge.

Outside of Telero the party meets three Defenders. William Hanson is the leader. Stien Celtos is among them. The Defenders are actively seeking Sandy Dunston.

In Telero the druid accidentally bumps into Sandy Dunston. From this encounter, the party learns that Dunston has a working relationship - or at least significant clout - with the town guard. She seems to know the Steward. Most of the gear, as she suggested, was in the town at the pawnshop. Her usual sidekick, Gene Parmesian is nowhere to be found. Sandy Dunston suggests the party investigate the kobold lair.

After meeting with Sir Donald Snodgrass, the party learns valuable information about the area. Snodgrass is a gracious and generous host. The party opts to not purchase an "adventuring license" from the Steward and they decline Snodgrass' offer to outfit the party. Snodgrass offers to finance a venture to the kobold lair, but advises the party to stay away from the goblin dens to the north.

Using the back-up cash which the Simeon brought from Faelon's father, the party re-equips, buying mostly goods which were stolen from them already. The goodly rabbi entrusts Prince Faelon with 10 gp.s of spending cash. Faelon returns 1 gp to the Plowman's as a token of gratitude.

During the stay at Telero, a band of kobolds ambush Massaquoit Barkeater and Jason Hawksclaw. The scouts wisely retreat from the encounter.

The party is presented with several adventuring opportunities:
  1. Hunt down and kill a giant stag beetle which is threatening local peasants.
  2. Invade a kobold lair in Bastion Valley.
  3. Explore the abandoned tower at Forkestre.
  4. Attack the goblin's north of Telero.

Without the permission of the corrupt steward, the party sets off on foot in the direction of the kobold's lair. They leave the main road in Bastion Valley and follow a narrow trail in the appropriate direction. The silence becomes deafening as they get closer to the den of kobolds. The party's glorious leader correctly assumes that an ambush is afoot after Massaquoit's wolf springs a trap. As the wolf dangles helplessly like a flea-bitten piniatta, the prince moves forward checking for traps while Hawksclaw unsuccessfully attempts to shoot the rope attached to the wolf. The prince's foolish overconfidence proves to be his undoing. He and his fundamentalist guardian trigger a poisonous needle trap which greatly reduces Faelon's strength. As Faelon moves back, Hawksclaw moves to his position and a web spell is cast on them both. A company of kobolds begin to move in on the party from all directions.

Disaster looked certain for the outnumbered and surprised party, but Massaquoit, who had spotted a trip wire earlier had climbed high into one of the trees and was unseen by the kobold raiders passing below him. As they passed under his tree, the branches, bushes and vines came to life snaring and entangling nearly half the raiders and saving the party from certain doom.

The kobold's captain is hit by two arrows; one from Faelon, the other from Hawksclaw-- killing him.

The remaining kobolds are dispatched with ease. Kevynn has a metagaming choice at the start of the next game session. At a price of 1 HP he can subdue a kobold. Alternately, the remaining kobolds are killed by virtue of the spells which were cast and the fighters who are still able to take actions.

Rule 1- Do not in any circumstances, underestimate Kobolds. Rule 2 - Do not, in all remaining circumstances, underestimate Kobolds. Any questions?

A couple of points to ponder: (1) Dunston is wanted by the Templars. Dunston also has a working relationship - or at least significant clout - with the town guard. And, casually name-drops the steward. She's in town, so was most of your gear, but not her little friend.
(2) Someone painted a target on HawksClaw. A whole lot of someones were targeting Hawksclaw. Coincidence?
(2a) Hawksclaw shoots at Mozzarella. Noone can find Mozzarella now, and #2 above is happening. Coincidence?
(3) Everyone says "go to the kobolds, they're easy" - EXCEPT the bloke living outside the town walls, who says "Don't mess with them - RUN AWAY!" Two encounters later, it's Everyone 0, Yokel 2.
(4) The Steward has a business relationship (at the very least) with Dunston, but doesn't want us to know about it. He's also running a good little thugocracy in the baron's absence (although, we don't know much about how the Baron runs the place either. This may be simple continuation of policy. And, no, he's not incompetent - or he'd be in the midden and some other yutz would be "Steward.") Also, he's part of the "everyone" from #3 above.
(5) Dunston wants to attack Goblins. She's looking for something she thinks they have. The Baron is absent because he's "looking for something". Kobolds are active all over the place. We don't know what that something is - and we should find out.
(6) Baron's Daughter won't have anything to do with the Prince since we stayed at Ploughmans. Quite possibly a good thing, though she probably knows what her father's looking for.

Also, the party's spent the lion's share of the backup cash. Since the Prince was adamant he had 10 GP in coin, he has no weapon, or vice versa.
